Norman R. Wheeler is the 2024 candidate for District Attorney of the Sixth Judicial District serving Grant, Luna and Hidalgo Counties. He is endorsed by the Silver City Police Officers Association (SCPOA) and believes that everything that has been an issue with crime in our counties is not a Democrat or Republican problem, rather it is a community problem impacting ALL citizens.
Over the last several years, drugs have permeated the community fueling high crime rates and devastating families. Despite New Mexico's intense uptick in crime, Wheeler has leveraged his extensive legal experience prosecuting violent crime as well as his relationships with law enforcement to successfully manage hundreds of cases at a time.
"The District Attorney's Office should not be politicized as it has been. I intend to refocus the office around an aggressive, intelligent analysis of facts applied to the law, not around who knows who," said Wheeler.
Before prosecuting felony-level cases in judicial districts across the state, Wheeler focused on family law and juvenile court matters. In addition to his legal work, he sat on the Adult Drug Court panel in the sixth and eighth judicial districts. In 2018 Wheeler was named "Southwest New Mexico Prosecutor of the Year" by the New Mexico State Bar Association.*

While his legal experience runs the gamut, Norm’s recently been heavily involved in prosecuting drug-related cases, an issue that has permeated the community, fueled high crime rates and devastated families. Through Norm’s work in this department and his partnerships with law enforcement, he was able to go from managing a caseload of 50 cases to 200-300 on an ongoing basis, including some that were adopted and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Norm previously sat on Adult Drug Court panels in both the sixth and eighth judicial districts and collaborated with officers from local city, county, state and federal agencies. In 2018, Wheeler was named “Southwest New Mexico Prosecutor of the Year” from the Prosecutor’s Section of the New Mexico State Bar Association.

"Everything that has been an issue here is not a Democrat or Republican problem, it is a community problem." Norm Wheeler
One drug trafficker that took a lot of work to get behind bars was looking at 35 years in jail, your current District Attorney pled that to 9 years so he didn't have to go to trial which means this drug trafficker will actually serve a maximum of four and half years "that's not going to happen in Norman Wheeler's office".
Wheeler said, "The chief law enforcement of the district is the district attorney." George Gzoka, currently a defense attorney who attended, added that, "It is not just your opinion but it is statutorily written that the district attorney is the chief law enforcement officer."
